Ex-Examiner editor joins Newsom's staff

| Hussey |
Hussey left the Examiner in February after a meeting with the paper's new owner, Todd Vogt, who wished her well but said a "fresh start and some fresh ideas" were needed at the free paper.
She joined the Examiner in 2002 and was named editor-in-chief in July 2010.
In her new job, Hussey will oversee communications, social media and assist in policy and strategy, according to a news release from Newsom.
“Deirdre brings a depth political and media knowledge that makes her a natural fit for our team,” said Newsom, the former San Francisco mayor. “There is no doubt she will bring new energy to the office.”
Hussey said in the release: "Lt. Governor Newsom is a visionary, as we were reminded last week with the announcements regarding gay marriage. He has proposed and implemented public policy in areas such as health care and the environment that has set the national agenda. It is rare opportunity to be part of political team that is innovative and creative."
Hussey started today (May 14) and will be located at the State Building in San Francisco.

SF Weekly and parent company hit by boycott
Posted on 00:02 by Unknown
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, or SF MOMA, has pulled its ads from the SF Weekly as part of a national advertiser boycott launched by an Ohio minister to get the paper’s parent company to stop running sex ads that are alleged to promote sex trafficking.
Pastor Justin Wassel of Columbus, Ohio, has gathered thousands of signatures online asking Village Voice Media to shut down its Backpage.com adult section. He’s been joined by 20 other ministers.
Village Voice Media, owner of the SF Weekly, disputes the claim that its advertising results in sex trafficking, saying it has been an “industry leader in utilizing Internet technology, as well of hundreds of employees, to prevent such crimes.”
Other advertisers who have pulled their ads include Starbucks, Macy’s, MillerCoors, AT&T, LiveNation, REI, American Airlines, Pfizer, IKEA, H&M, Best Buy, T-Mobile, US Bank and IHOP.
SFist has a story about the boycott with links to statements from both sides about the controversy.

Commentator Wayne Shannon found dead

| Wayne Shannon |
Gerald Wayne Schetzle, who went by the name Wayne Shannon in his TV career, was found on April 28 south of Grangeville. An autopsy found no signs of physical trauma, but the coroner is awaiting results from toxicology testing.
Shannon arrived at KRON in the early 1980s after TV reporting jobs in Philadelphia and Detroit. He was part reporter, part humorist. He delivered a nightly commentary called “Just 4 You” on KRON, back in the days when it was the NBC affiliate. Blogger Edward Champion of edrants.com put together this bio of Shannon, the most detailed discussion of Shannon’s career. Champion writes:
- I wondered why there was no online record of a man who had touched millions, a man who was a little ahead of his time with his acerbic television commentaries. Two decades later, there had been something about Shannon’s approach that had caked its way into my noggin. Was it his common sense arguments? His acid barbs? I remember that he had been so funny that even the guys behind the camera couldn’t suppress their laughter. …

- It was absolutely clear that Wayne Shannon was a television talent, somewhere between consumer crusader and comedian, who was decades ahead of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. He took on auto manufacturers over epic ten part segments (and I would later learn that Michael Moore would pilfer some of Shannon’s comedic approach with Roger & Me). He would assemble homages and parodies to popular movies on the local evening news during a time in which such experimentation was unthinkable. (But in an age in which The Daily Show pours out a steady stream of satirical graphics, this is now commonplace.)

Historic San Mateo Times photos rescued
Posted on 00:01 by Unknown
More than 20 boxes of photos from the archives of the San Mateo Times have been purchased by the San Mateo County Historical Association, the San Mateo Daily Journal reports. The 30,000 photos span from the 1940s to the 1980s. Mitch Postel of the historical association bought the photos from a collector for $2,500. The Journal reports:
- The images captured in these photos illustrate many news scenes including car accidents and construction, but also features like people at the beach and portrait shots.
- Ninety-nine percent of the photos are directly out of San Mateo County, with a few photos associated with larger news stories, like the governor of California. The vast majority of photos are portraits of individuals from all sorts of topics, including obituaries, news stories and feature stories, he said.
- “The portrait shots are of people I’ve heard about but never seen,” said Postel.
- A notable discovery was a photo of John Daly, the founder of Daly City, which Postel said they never had before in their collections.
- It is now Postel’s goal to gather journalists who were around when these photos were published to explain the significance of these photos and why these people were in the news.
- “We have names and dates, but not why they are important,” he said. Older journalists are especially needed to help with photos that date back to the 1970s and earlier.
- Postel has been in communication with the president of the San Francisco Peninsula Press Club, Marshall Wilson, in working to find journalists to identify the photos.
- One photo that Postel remembered was a street scene in San Bruno that captured the Jax Drive-in restaurant from 1949, which was located near the present Walgreens on El Camino Real. “It used a wide angle shot.
- You can see a lot of El Camino and the undeveloped hills, the cool cars and the way people dressed.
- There is so much you can get out of that photo,” he said. The main goal is for the collection to be arranged so it can be available on display for the public’s use. A couple thousand have been identified so far, but the process still has a while to go with a completion estimate at about six months to one year, he said.
- “Once it is cataloged, it will be organized so the public can search them and make copies if they like,” said Postel. “It was an important 40-year period with a lot of dynamic things happening.”
- The San Mateo County Historical Association can be reached at (650) 299-0104.
Two Bay Area Knight fellows

Of the 13 U.S. journalists awarded Knight Fellowships at Stanford, two are from the Bay Area.
Mary Aviles, an editor at the Spanish-language EFE News Services in San Jose, intends to work on a “content sharing platform for independent Hispanic media to enable them to build larger audiences.”
Kevin Weston, a “new media entrepreneur” from Oakland, proposes to establish “a sustainable, replicable, nonprofit business model for community-based media, with a focus on the San Francisco Bay Area.”
